Derek Nannup is a Whadjuk, Bindjareb,Yued and Wardarndi man of the Noongar nation. He was born and raised in Perth and has been lucky enough to be surrounded by strong cultural leaders. As a student of many different high schools Derek had to rely on these leaders and his family to maintain a strong cultural education.
Derek believes that culture is central and vital to both his education and identity, and in this is inspired by his Pop who introduced him to what culture was really about. He performs and teaches the community about Noongar dances and culture, and has always been connected to his Country. When he dances, he feels that the spirit of his Country and old people are with him.
Derek currently works as the Indigenous Cultural Program Coordinator at Wesley College, teaching culture to young men who one day will continue to maintain our culture and share it with the rest of the world.
